Bicycle Coalition of Maine launches "BikeMaine," a major new ride

Bicycle Coalition of Maine launches "BikeMaine," a major new ride

On its twentieth anniversary, the Bicycle Coalition of Maine (BCM) is launching a major new 7-day bicycle event that will showcase Maine as a premier cycling destination on the East Coast. BCM is Maine’s leading voice for bicyclists with programs on safety, improved infrastructure and advocacy both in Augusta and Washington. As a result of BCM’s efforts, Maine has consistently ranked in the top ten bicycle-friendly states and as high as number two last year.

The new ride, called "BikeMaine," will be a weeklong rolling exploration of Maine with each year’s route taking place in a different part of the state. Bicyclists will camp in designated host communities each evening and eat community-prepared meals using Maine ingredients.

Hannah Scully (Saco) named 2012 Maine Games Youth Athlete of the Year

Seventeen year-old Hannah Scully, of Saco, has been named the 2012 Maine Games Youth Athlete of the Year.

Since 2003, and the Maine Games' first year in existence, this Thornton Academy senior has been the most prolific athlete in the organization's 10-year history.

In 2003, Scully, then an eight-year old baton twirler, won her first Maine Games medal (gold). Her eight-year participation record has led her to the medal podium more than 30 times.

Competing in team, solo, pairs, and two-baton events in the Maine Games State Baton Twirling Championships, Scully has been a part big part of every twirling event offered by the Pine Tree State's official State Games.

In 2004 and 2005, she also ran in the Maine Games State Track and Field Championships at Fitzpatrick Stadium, in Portland, winning a gold and two silver medals in the 50m and 100m, respectively.

Maine Department of Conservation: Loon Plate Weekend on July 14-15 Offers Free Admission to Maine St

If there’s a Maine Loon License Plate on your vehicle, you’re supporting conservation and wildlife efforts in Maine. If there’s a Maine Loon License Plate on your vehicle, you also get free admission this weekend to all Maine state parks and historic sites.
As a way to say “thank you” to Maine drivers who have purchased loon plates, the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands (BPL), under the Maine Department of Conservation, will open up the state’s 48 state parks and historic sites this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, July 14-15, to free day use for all vehicles bearing the distinctive plates.
Since the program’s inception by the Maine Legislature in 1993, more than $17 million in loon plate proceeds has gone to the Maine Department of Conservation and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIF&W).
“Maine loon plate holders know that they are helping the future of the state when they purchase one of these special plates,” Will Harris, BPL director, said.
