Charlotte White Center Recipient of Gannett Foundation Community Grant from WLBZ 2

The Charlotte White Center in Dover-Foxcroft received a post-holiday gift from WLBZ 2 in Bangor:  a Gannett Foundation Community Grant.  WLBZ 2 President and General Manager Judy Horan made the grant presention to Richard Brown, CEO of the Charlotte White Center. 

The Gannett Foundation is a corporate foundation sponsored by Gannett Company, Inc., the parent company of WLBZ 2 in Bangor and WCSH 6 in Portland.  Through its Community Grant Program, Gannett Foundation supports non-profit activities in the communities in which Gannett does business.

Pine Tree Hospice Receives Gannett Foundation Grant from WLBZ 2

Pine Tree Hospice in Dover-Foxcroft plans to put its Gannett Foundation Community Grant to use in its mission to provide care and comfort to those with a progressive, life-limiting illness in its 3,900 square mile service area.  WLBZ 2 President and General Manager Judy Horan made the grant presentation to Pine Tree Hospice Executive Director Jane Stitham this week.

Youth Obesity Program - We Can!

At Waterville Junior High School, health teacher Jane Dean is teaching sixth-graders how to see through deceptive junk food marketing, improve activity levels and make healthier snack choices.

At the Mitchell Elementary School in Waterville, Wendy Lagasse of MaineGeneral Health System's Prevention Center is presenting a program to third-graders in an effort to get the children to break from a national statistic -- that children average six hours a day watching TV or playing video games.

Numerous studies show a direct correlation between time spent in front of a screen and elevated risks for weight gain and related health problems, says Alan Majka, University of Maine Cooperative Extension Educator in the Kennebec County Office in Augusta.

Maine Coast Foliage Color Peaking This Week

AUGUSTA, Maine - Peak leaf color will reach all of Maine's coast this week, according to the fifth fall foliage report from the Maine Department of Conservation (DOC).
 
Forest rangers in the tracking zones covering the southern, middle and northern portions of the coast are observing peak color, from 85 to 100 percent, and moderate leaf drop of 30 to 50 percent.
 
Peak color and moderate leaf drop are also being reported throughout the tracking zone that stretches from Fryeburg and Sebago Lake to Augusta, Bangor and Dover-Foxcroft. Peak color is holding on in the western mountains region from Rangeley to Bethel, and in eastern Maine between Bangor and Calais, according to the report.
 
Rangers are observing foliage color past peak in Aroostook County, and in northern locations from Jackman to Greenville and Millinocket.
